30 Tips for VidCon 2016

VidCon is the largest gathering for all people who love online video and internet culture. This will be my first year attending and I am a person who likes to feel prepared. Here are our 30 best tips and tricks for having a great VidCon experience!

1. Don’t pass up any opportunities! Just a simple “hi” to your favorite creator(s). OPPORTUNITIES are very important!
– ** If they are in a rush don’t make them stop, chances are they are on there way somewhere or need to be somewhere. If there is time try to talk to them or even a hug. Make memories.
2. Live in the moment and don’t try to record everything or always on your phone. Make the most of your time there.
– Everyone will be vlogging and I’m sure if you miss something someone will have a picture or video.
3. Attend VidCon Prom if you can because it’s really fun & it gives you a chance to meet new people.
– It’s also a great way to end the whole VidCon experience and gives you a chance to just hangout and dance with your friends.
4. Try (if you can) to pick up your badge the day before VidCon starts instead of the day of to avoid longer lines.
– This year it’s Wednesday, June 22. Time is TBD.
5. Try to use the VidCon app to help you forgive out where your favorite creators are going to be. (such as panel, q&a, etc.)
VidCon will launch the app sometime soon this year once they figure out who is going and the schedule.
6. When you see/meet your favorite creators don’t freak out because they are human beings too.
– As hard as it may be, try to keep it cool, calm, and collected. Because most creators don’t want someone screaming in their face.
7. Be safe. Use the buddy system. You are probably very open to everyone since it’s a YouTube convention but be safe!
VidCon had a bunch of security everywhere but always remember that randoms can walk on outside the convention center.
8. Be prepared to wait inlines, so be patient and maybe make some friends while waiting.
– Get to know people and they will probably have same interest you do so you’ll have something to talk about.
9. Make sure you bring all chargers for your phone/camera & have memory to store pictures and videos.
– Portable chargers are great because it can be hard to find and outlet sometimes.
10. (Something you should know) VidCon did have wifi (& so did some of the hotels) but it was slow because everyone was using it.
– So make sure you can use cellar data.
11. Make sure to bring money if you want to buy food or if you want to buy Merch.
– It’s completely up to you how much money you want to bring. If you are looking to buy Merch the earlier you go to buy the better.
12. Don’t overpack your bag you take with you to VidCon because it can get heavy with the free stuff you get in the Expo Hall.
– & You don’t want your back to get sore.
13. Try to attend at least one Mainstage performance during VidCon because those are like the heart and soul of VidCon
– There is always many creators featured so it gives you a chance to see multiple people.
14. If you see John and Hank Green, thank them because they are the reason VidCon exist.
– Be respectful and nice to anyone working at VidCon as well.
15. If there are food trucks at VidCon, try food from all the trucks!
– All the food is delicious!! I recommend you try as many different things as you can.
16. Watch VidCon experience videos if it’s your first time going! It helps a lot.
– Watch actual attendees not featured creators that way you can get a better take on what to expect.
17. If you see a creator you want to meet but they are in a rush, don’t stop them for a picture. Just a simple “hi” will work.
– Featured Creators have a busy schedule so don’t hold them up and make them late to things.
18. If you plan on giving a gift, make sure it’s small enough so they can fit it in their suitcase if they don’t live in LA.
– Lots of creators love getting gifts or letters. But don’t feel obligated to give them something.
19. Don’t be sad/mad if you aren’t able to meet your favorite creator at VidCon, it’s hard for them to meet everyone.
– Don’t have the expectation that you will meet everyone and get a picture with everyone because that is unrealistic and in the end you will just be disappointed.
20. If you haven’t bought your ticket yet, BUY IT ASAP! Ticket prices will rises and before you know it, they will be sold out.
21. Be open minded at VidCon and try to do many different activities. In the Expo Hall and outside.
– Ex. Don’t always go to Q&As, make sure to go to some Mainstages and panels too.
22. Read everything on vidcon.com because it will really help you and will help you to better understand stuff.
– Especially read the FAQ page! And if you can’t find your answer or need a more specific answer feel free to DM me.
23. Have an idea of what you want to do each day so you aren’t completely lost.
– Have some sorta of schedule. VidCon will be posting and agenda online a week or two before the convention.
24. Turn on Twitter notifications for your favorite creators because they will most likely be tweeting where they will be.
– During VidCon turn on Twitter notifications for my vidcontips account too!
25. Remember VidCon is 3 days so make the most of whatever days you go!
– Just remember HAVE FUN while at VidCon!
26. As well as being safe, be sanitary and clean. There are so many people and no one wants to smell your B.O.!
27. Bring sharpies, so your favorite creators can sign stuff for you!
– Have one handy because youtubers aren’t always carrying sharpies with them.
28. Make sure to have sunscreen if you plan on waiting for a concert outside! You don’t want to get a sunburn.
29. A lot of the time the security didn’t know what was going on, so I would say they aren’t a good source of info.
– Ask someone around you or tweet me!
30. If you get signings in the signing lottery make sure to not take off your wristbands once you get them when you register.
I hope everyone is as excited for VidCon as we are! Who are you most excited to see at VidCon?
