Emily Tremaine, who you may recognize from “The Blacklist” and “Vinyl,” now plays the pivotal role of Natalie Atwood on Freeform’s “Guilt.” In this exclusive interview with Emily, we learn more about her character, how she prepared for this role and what fans can expect for the second half of the season.
So you are playing the part of prosecutor Natalie Atwood, who is Grace’s sister. What did you do to prepare for this role?
Natalie is the older sister who comes and tries to sort things out for grace. I have a couple friends who are lawyers, I talked to them about the project. But I also talked to the two creators, Catherine and Nicole, because they were both lawyers before they decided to become screenwriters. It was nice to have them on deck whenever I had any questions about it.
Natalie has been very loyal and trusting of Grace, can you say if we’ll see her start to doubt her sister?
Without saying too much, Natalie definitely uncovers more information about the case and about Grace as the story goes on. I can say she doesn’t like everything she finds out. It’s a hard thing with sisters because there is an unconditional love between them, but whenever you find out information that leads to doubt its disconcerting.
What has been your favorite part about playing this character compared to other roles you have done?
I think my favorite part is she is a strong woman. She comes over and is really trying to help her sister. She is not afraid to use her sexuality to get what she needs. But at the same time she is intelligent and can use that to get the information she needs for the case and she does anything to help her sister.
Natalie has recently been involved romantically with Detective Bruno, can you tell us if we’ll be seeing more of this relationship as the season progresses?
Yeah I think what’s interesting about the relationship is they are tied together by Grace. So regardless of if the relationship goes further or not they will keep seeing each other because he is off graces case, but as you see in the last episode he is still bugged by it and finding out information. I don’t know, I think it’s hard to deny the attraction between the two of them. I mean you did see the morning after (laughs). I think what’s interesting is it goes back and forth between her really needing him to get information about grace to being confused about her true feelings about really liking him.
We are halfway through the season and there are still so many questions about who killed Molly. Was the cast aware of who killed Molly once filming began, or was everyone on a need to know basis?
No nobody knew at all. And it wasn’t a need to know basis. It was a strictly no one can know until the end!! Which actually made it great because throughout the series the characters are constantly questioning, the audience is constantly questioning the characters and even as the actors we were constantly questioning what happening. It made reading each new episode really fun and exciting. And I also really like about the show that we find out who the killer is in the end, it’s not a dragged out storyline.
Did the cast have theories and try to figure out who it was on your own?
Yes! We did and I tried to convince everyone to place bets, but no one did!
If you could describe the second half of the season in 3 words, what would they be?
Secrets! Twists! And Blood!
If those three words don’t make you excited for the rest of the season, I don’t know what will! Make sure to watch Emily and the rest of the cast on “Guilt” every Monday night on Freeform. Leave your comments below or tweet us @PopHeartsTV!
