Exclusive Interview: “The Voice” UK Semi Finalist, Ruth Brown

“The Voice” has become an international brand and many talented singers have come out of the show, including, Ruth Brown. She’s from the UK’s “The Voice,” where she was part of Sir. Tom Jones’ team!

I had a chance to talk with Ruth about the show, recording her new album and what she has been up to since the show!

1. Talk about your upbringing with music, how did you get involved?
I was always involved. My mother comes from a musical family and my Dad was also very musical. Growing up, we always had music on in the house. We always learned the songs in the car on our way to school and started to sing together (my two younger sisters and I). In primary school I joined the choir.

2. Was there anyone in your childhood that inspired you to pursue your career in music?
I always listened to Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. I learned how to sing from them.

3. I learned that you were bullied as a kid, what advice would you give teens reading this who might be facing those same issues?
If you got haters, you’re doing something right. Keep strong there is always light at the end of the tunnel. There is only one of you and you have a purpose. Not everyone has made it to where you are now.

4. You were a semi-finalist on “The Voice” in the UK, were you a fan of the show before auditioning? What made you decide to audition?
I hadn’t heard of the show before. I decided to audition because it looked like it stood for great talent and I wanted to be a part of that.

5. What was that experience like for you being on the show?
My experience on the show was amazing. I loved the photoshoots, the interviews, the rehearsals with the live band, the hosts and the team were amazing and extremely supportive.

6. Your coach on the show was music legend, Tom Jones, what was one piece of advice he gave you that really resonated?
I remember him saying to tune into my emotions when I perform, use them to my advantage.

7. As many people are wondering, what have you been up to since leaving the show?
Well recently I’ve been working with a mental health charity Key Changes, and they offer music engagement and recovery servb0ices to clients in hospital and in the community suffering with mental health problems. That means one to one studio sessions, assisting clients in making their own music and encouraging them to express themselves through music. I’ve also been writing in the studio songs for my Mixtape and Album. I’ve recently also joined an acting school.

8. Is it true when you write music you feel more relaxed? Where do you find inspiration from when writing?
Yes, I also feel relaxed because writing music is like breathing out. It’s a good way to express my feelings and to show my feelings. I find inspiration from everything I’ve observed and experienced.

11. Are you currently working on an album? If so, what style will it be?
It will be a range of sounds. I can’t do one sound. It will be soul and everything I represent. Music.

12. When you are not creating music, what do you like to do in your spare time?
I love to chill with my friends and watch films with my partner. I also love shopping and public entertaining.

13. What is one thing most people wouldn’t know about you?
Erm…I can do a lot of crazy voices. Lol.

Thank you so much to Ruth for taking the time to chat with us! We can’t wait to hear your new music!
