“Once Upon A Time” Recap: Season 5 Episode 19 “Sisters”

Zelena finally gets her wish to meet her mother, Regina embraces her sister and Cora makes amends.

It all begins with a date from Hell… literally.

Hades takes Zelena on a picnic, offering her not only the Underworld, but his companionship once his heart starts up with true love’s kiss. He wants to be with her in the real Storybrooke and make chaos together. All the heroes will be stuck in the Underworld together, as Hades put all their names on tombstones. Zelena neither says yes nor no to his proposal and comes home alone to find Regina waiting for her.   She doesn’t take kindly to her sister looking out for her and asks Regina to leave. Regina knows there is only person who can stop Zelena…their mother.

Cora is doing some dirty work in the deep Underworld when she comes across Hook’s hook. Being enchanted, Cora cuts herself with it and she can once again use her powers. Hook meets with her and brings her to Regina. Regina explains the situation to her mother and Cora says the only way to stop Zelena is by having her forget Hades altogether. The duo go to a stream to fetch water that’ll make her forget.   Cora knows Zelena will meet with her since her one wish in life was to have a mother. Zelena lets Cora inside her house to talk and make amends. While this reunion is happening, Regina sneaks in and has the water ready for Zelena to drink, but Zelena is wise to their tricks. She throws the water into the fireplace and calls out Regina. The two almost go head to head with their fireballs, but Cora stops them. She explains that they once knew they were sisters long ago…

When Regina was young, she always dreamt of having a sister and would play with her doll, pretending she was her sister.   Cora catches her and tells her she should always look out for herself and never want for another human being. As Cora leaves, Regina comes across Cora’s wand and tries use it’s magic to make her doll come alive. But there was a curse placed on the wand which knocks out Regina. Cora and Regina’s father know only family blood can save her. Cora seeks out Zelena and brings her to the castle. Zelena is able to use her magic to save Regina and the two girls become fast friends, playing dress up. Zelena accidentally open a case only meant for blood relatives to have access to, so Regina concludes Zelena must be her sister! They run off to ask Cora, who confirms they are related, but Cora says Regina must not ruin her future by having a sister and gives them both the water from the creek to make sure they never remember.

When Cora fills them in on their past, all wounds seem to be healed. The trio heads to the bridge over fire to see off their mother. She wishes them both well. There’s not a dry eye in the group. Cora walks out and is almost consumed by the fire but then the white light comes to take her off. Regina and Zelena promise to be good to each other. Regina even tells Zelena to go to Hades and says maybe he can be saved from evil.

Zelena goes to meet up with Hades at the diner, where he’s dancing around waiting for her. But her date is interrupted when Rumple confronts her about giving Belle a sleeping spell. She tells him his threats are idle since he cannot hurt her on account of their deal. Rumple knows this and that’s why he brought his dad, Peter Pan, with him. Peter informs Zelena that she may be wicked, but she’ll never be as bad as him. He throws a sheet over her head to take her away.

Meanwhile, our other heroes have their own problems when James knocks out David and pretends to be Charming to the group. He goes with Emma to meet up with Robin and the baby. He slaps a magic wristlet on Emma and holds them up at gun point as Cruella pulls up. She explains this baby is their ticket out of the Underworld. They go off to the port and are about to push Robin and Emma into the sea of souls when David and Hook come in to save the day. “You think I don’t know how to escape from my own jail cell?!” David asks. The two duke it out but when James is knocked down to the ground, he doesn’t listen to his love Cruella (who tells him to leave) but rather pulls out a knife and lungs towards David. David blocks the knife by swinging his brother into the sea of souls. Emma assures David it was the right thing to do.

I loved the ending tonight!   What a great way for some father-son bonding than by kidnapping and torturing Zelena. I did not seeing that coming! It begs the question as well, can Peter Pan ever be redeemed? Technically he’s helping his son, which is his unfinished business, but is this the path he’s supposed to take? Also, was anyone kind of disappointed at how soft Cora got? It happened rather quickly for someone who has always been so conniving. But I do have to admit I got a little choked up when the three of them were saying goodbye. When Regina cries, we all cry.

The James storyline was fun, I wished they would’ve explored that more. And Cruella is going to an even bigger problem for our heroes now I imagine since they got rid of her man. I would think she’d be none too pleased about that.   I also like when Charming gets a storyline because he typically takes a backseat to Snow.
