INTO THE LION’S DEN
The episode opens as Eric and Amanda willingly stroll into the police station, not necessarily to submit a statement (though they do), but rather to interrogate Detective Cornell on her questionable tactic of exposing Eric’s “juvie” past.
Of course, Andrea doesn’t apologize for her behavior and instead gets Eric to admit he was on the rooftop the night his wife fell or was pushed off of it. And as we gaze deep into his crystal blue eyes, it’s impossible not to believe him when he claims his innocence yet again.
ANOTHER BOMBSHELL
But before Eric can escape Andrea’s territory, she informs us of another one of Kate’s secrets — she withdrew $100,000 from Eric’s savings account.
What else was Kate hiding, is she a spy? Is their marriage a sham? IS HER NAME EVEN KATE??
THE EX
Shane Campbell. Is there yet another suspect we need to investigate? We learn that Kate was seeing her ex on a regular basis and Eric was tailing them. What reason would they have to be meeting in secret?
As we’ve discussed before, I’m going to call this what it is: another red herring. Look away! There’s no need to know why they were seeing each other. Shane didn’t make an appearance in the premiere episode. I’m 99% sure we already met our killer in that first episode. Let’s forget about Shane.
THE ALCOHOLIC & STEVEN PORTER
Eric’s mom is a drunk, and Steven Porter is a punk kid who Eric punched in the locker room as a teenager. Can we agree neither of these characters are important to solving the mystery of Kate’s death? Let’s move on from these two now that two of our questions from episode 1 are answered.
THE EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT
Eric’s secretary makes another guest appearance! She’s still flying under the radar and not showing us her cards, but I don’t buy the nice girl act. I’m onto you, May Stone (McNally Sagal). I’m onto you.
THE MYSTERY MAN & THE BEST FRIEND
So the black T-shirt onlooker from episode 1 returns, and this time as a more hostile reincarnation! Eric stumbles upon him beating up his best friend Neil. Neil, what did you do? Spill!
And later, the episode ends with the mystery man inside assistant Liam Connors’ apartment. I’m fairly certain he isn’t Liam, so again, who is he?
EXPLODING BOMBSHELL
Unlike ABC’s fan favorite show “Lost” where questions were always asked but never answered, “Secrets and Lies” is already on a roll of exposing its own secrets. By the end of episode 2, we already know the reason behind Kate’s $100,000 withdrawal from Eric’s account. Talk about a quick resolution.
EASTER EGG: BEN CRAWFORD
As a joke, I thought it would have been hilarious had season 1’s prime murder suspect Ben Crawford actually been the murderer in season 2. Wouldn’t THAT have been a twist?!
Alas, in episode 2, Amanda reveals Ben was killed in his prison cell!
