“Shadowhunters” Premiere Recap: Absolute “Pandemonium”!

“Shadow hunters” premiered Jan. 12 on Freeform, the new name for ABC Family. It’s a spin-off of a fantasy book series, “The Mortal Instruments.” I actually read the first three books of the series in high school and fell in love with every character. When I heard there was a spin-off TV series in the works I was excited but also very skeptical. I get very attached to characters in any book I read just like any other bibliophile.

Tread lightly! Spoilers ahead…

SHADOWHUNTERS - ABC Family's "Shadowhunters" stars Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Garroway, Matthew Daddario as Alec Lightwood, Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood, Katherine McNamara as Clary Fray, Dominic Sherwood as Jace Wayland, Alberto Rosende as Simon Lewis and Harry Shum Jr. as Magnus Bane. The premiere of “Shadowhunters” PERFECTLY set up the plot for what is to come in the rest of the season. Now it has been a while since I read the books but, to me, what we have seen so far has been spot on. “Pandemonium” is exactly how I would have pictured it! The cast resembles the characters I created in my head when reading the series. The pace started off perfectly and the relationships between the characters have already begun to foster. There has been a lot of character growth within just two episodes.

The scene in Clary’s home after Jocelyn (her mother) has been kidnapped was DEAD ON. Let me just say, when Jace said “I got you.” after Clary passed out from the demon venom, I got chills. As a long term fan of the series, I could not be more happy with the outcome. I am so excited to see how the plot will develop and how much of the original story will stay in tact.

When first hearing about the series, I started watching for updates and checking to see when they announced who the cast would consist of. With each member that was announced I was very pleased, but anxiously waiting to see who would be portraying Clary was the most impatient I had ever been! Watching Kat McNamara play Clary absolutely blew me away. She portrayed everything that Clary represented: Courage, Compassion, Strength, Love.

Love is an interesting thing in the Shadowhunter world. I love the relationship between Clary and Jace! Dominic Sherwood IS Jace Wayland. In the books Jace is sarcastic, closed off and blunt, but with Clary he opens up to a different side of himself. Even in episode one, “The Mortal Cup”, you can see the chemistry between Jace and Clary start to change the way they both look at their worlds.

Then there is also Simon, everyone’s best friend, that is undoubtedly in love with Clary. I, personally, want Simon to be with Isabelle. Isabelle is that girl that every guy wants to be with but she makes herself seem unapproachable with her overwhelming confidence. She is the girl we all wish we could be! I think Isabelle along the way starts to help Simon break out of his shell and realize that even the seemingly mundane can be heroes. Side note: Am I the only one that thinks Emeraude Toubia (Isabelle) could be Camila Cabello’s twin sister?

Out of all the main characters I think Alec and Magnus are the most interesting to me. Alec has a strong relationship with Jace because they are parabatai. It is hinted in the books and in the Shadowhunters premiere that Alec is jealous of the attention that Clary receives from Jace. Alec is one of those characters that is very strong willed and tries not to show too much emotion. I think Alec thinks that he could never care about anyone other than Jace, but then he is caught off guard when he meets Magnus. Alec changes around Magnus, he lets down a barrier that I think no one else has ever been able to break through. They are my favorite couple in the book series. I guess we will find out if their relationship will be included in Shadowhunters.
