Shadowhunters Recap: “Bad Blood”

This week’s episode of “Shadowhunters” was a bit messy. Now that the hunt for the Mortal Cup is over and it has been safely secured in the Institute, we can focus on our favorite shadowhunters and our new favorite downworlder. Of course, no one has forgotten that Jocelyn is still in need of rescuing. The Clave has lost faith in the Lightwood family and has sent a “babysitter” to check up on them. Simon is on edge, Izzy is acting grown up and Alec proposed? What is happening?

Let’s start at the beginning. The Institute’s alarm goes off so Clary and the gang head outside to see what seems to be the problem. I was heartbroken to find Raphael carrying Simon’s lifeless body. Thankfully, he is not completely dead, but this leaves a tough choice to be made in Clary’s hands. After Camille snacked on Simon a few times he started to transition. Clary is overwhelmed with emotion. You can see the pain, anger and sadness in her eyes as she cries for her dear friend.

Raphael explains to Clary that she must decide to either stake her beloved best friend and kill him for good, or bury him before sunset so he can rise as a new vampire. Katherine McNamara did an amazing job in this episode. If she doesn’t get nominated for an award for this performance I will be surprised. What would you do if you were Clary? Would you let your best friend die?

Back inside the Institute, the “babysitter” from the Clave arrived appearing to be Valentine. Alec sends an arrow flying and the guy just catches it. That guy actually turned out to be a girl named Lydia Branwell. She walks in with a plan to improve the way the Institute has been running. Maryse has an automatic hate towards Lydia, seems she has control issues, even though the Branwells and Lightwoods have a history. Lydia is not intimidated; when Alec reports that the werewolves had been attacked she was the first to take action.

While all this is happening, Clary goes to visit Simon’s mom to make up an explanation for his behavior. She can’t bring herself to lie to his mom so she, instead, packs a bag for Simon while Jace tells her a depressing story about how his dad made him train a falcon. If you have read the books, then you know exactly what I am talking about. When he presented the trained falcon, his dad snapped the bird’s neck. Apparently the point of the story is “emotions cloud judgement”, but all it did was make me quite sad. My favorite part of this episode is when Clary says “If being a shadowhunter means that she has to be dead inside, I’m not sure I want to be one”. Good on you Clary! Stay true to you!

SHADOWHUNTERS - "Bad Blood" - Alec and Clary are forced to make some hard decisions in “Bad Blood,” an all-new episode of “Shadowhunters,” airing Tuesday, March 1st at 9:00 – 10:00 p.m., EST/PST on Freeform, the new name for ABC Family. (Freeform/John Medland) STEPHANIE BENNETT, MATTHEW DADDARIO

Alec and Lydia arrive at the werewolf headquarters to find that it was Forsaken that attacked. These were not ordinary Forsaken, since they took more power to take down than usual. They take the Forsaken back to the Institute to be examined by Magnus to see if there was magic used to create these creatures. During the examination, Izzy comes in to check out the physical components of the Forsaken. The warlock delivers his preliminary autopsy to a handsome and shirtless Alec. Somehow Magnus manages to have an adult conversation with Alec tells him he should start living life for himself instead of his parents, the Clave, everyone.

As we all know, #Malec is my OTP, but somehow Alec thought it was a good idea to PROPOSE to LYDIA! Granted, he does this to stay in control of the Institute and to help Lydia finally have a chance at running one. I’m sure this all makes sense in the Shadowhunter world but I just can’t wrap my head around it. What is Magnus going to do when he finds out!?

The end of this episode was the hardest for me to watch. Clary makes the decision to bury Simon, which means he will become a vampire. Clary tries to dig the grave herself but Jace, seeing how hard it was for her, took the shovel from her and started digging. When Simon finally climbed out of his grave, he was hungry and very on edge, and confused as to how ended up in a cemetery. Clary breaks the news to Simon that he died and she made the decision to let him transition. There was a moment when Simon looked extremely hurt, and I understand this isn’t a situation, but he ran away from Clary and said he could never be the person he was. Clary was completely distraught and heartbroken for her best friend. Raphael, being the new vamp leader, promised to watch over Simon as he transitioned.
