“The Fosters” Recap: If and When

OH MY GOODNESS FOSTERS FANS! Last night’s episode of Freeform’s “The Fosters” titled “If and When” threw me on such a emotional roller coaster…which to be honest, happens every week! As always I’m here to share my thoughts and give you the rundown on all that has happened.

Callie

Callie’s drama this week had to do with AJ (recurring guest star Tom Williamson), who she believes is communicating with her through Fost and Found. After doing some digging with Mariana, we find out that he must be in San Diego because that’s where the messages are coming from. She sets up a meeting with him at a local coffee shop yet he doesn’t show. You know who does show though… Rafael (guest star Alberto De Diego), Callie’s former boss at the foster care drop-in center.

We come to learn that AJ is actually in Arizona with Ty (guest star Chris Warren) after he calls Callie to check in & tell her that he is feeling kinda sketchy. Callie immediately lets Stef know & asks her to bring him back. After telling the family about the plan, Brandon (who just learned the truth about Ty after hearing Mike and Ana discuss it) lets it slip to Callie what Ty did. That causes her to call the Arizona number again to warn AJ. She doesn’t really get the chance to though because guess who answers…Ty. Just when Ty is ready to run again the Arizona police along with Stef burst in and arrest them both.

But wait… so who has been messaging her on Fost and Found pretending to be AJ?! Oh why that would none other than Jude’s new friend, Jack Downey (guest star Tanner Buchanan). I have no idea what his plan was for catfishing Callie. Any thoughts?

Stef & Lena

Last week when we left Stef, we saw her reading a letter from the doctor telling her that the risk of advanced breast and ovarian cancer is a lot higher now than the last time they tested her & we saw her make the decision to keep it hidden from everyone a little while longer.

Not only did she break that news to Lena this week but she was also very adamant and successful in the arrest of Ty & AJ. Lucky for AJ she listened to Mike, after much argument, and was able to get his charges to just be for being a runway and not as an accomplice to Ty’s crimes.

We also saw more of the relationship between Stef and her mother Sharon (guest star Annie Potts), who will be sticking around for a little while longer thanks to Stef recent discovery and Will’s (guest star Rob Morrow) tricks in “messing up” the RV. I absolutely LOVE the relationship between Stef and Sharon because it is so real and truthful. Sharon is one of those characters that comes along once or twice every season and you always think, “what would this show be if she stayed here longer?” And now we get to see that happen.

Brandon & Mariana

Brandon and Mariana’s storylines crossed paths this week. Brandon and Mat (recurring guest star Jordan Rodrigues) are hard at work on their R&J musical. Brandon convinces Mat to be their Romeo, whereas Mat tries to convince him to allow Tayla (guest star Madisen Beaty), aka Brandon’s ex girlfriend who know he has an interest in Callie, to be their Juliet. Brandon of course disagrees and calls for open auditions.

Which is where Mariana comes in. Mari has decided to audition for the musical seeing as how she has lost the race for junior class president. The only issue with her being apart of this show is her history with Mat and if it’s a good idea for the exes to be working so closely together.

Jesus

Jesus has a new storyline that doesn’t involve girl drama! I believe this has something to do with the fact that Noah Centino has the ability to carry a lot more emotional weight that Jesus deserves.

This week we see him and Nick (guest star Louis Hunter) grow closer. Nick convinces our Jesus to reach out and try to find his birth father. Which leads him to asking birth mother Ana (recurring guest star Alexandra Barreto) & cousin Adriana (guest star Yvette Monreal) about details on this mystery father. Which thanks to Adriana we get a name and a work place.

Enter Gabriel (guest star Brandon Quinn), the potential father in question. Gabe works construction alongside another Gutierrez. We see Jesus approach Gabe at one of his jobsites, things don’t really go as planned. What Jesus once thought would be an easy task turned into a much harder one when he chickened out on asking for confirmation and instead worked alongside Gabe.

I can’t wait to see where Jesus’s storyline goes during these next few episodes!

Jude

Jude had a more laxed storyline this week. We got to see a glimpse into his friendship with Jack, which apparently isn’t what we all thought. Jack is socially awkward and isn’t interested in doing anything other than playing video games. Jude wants an actual friend though seeing as how his best friend/boyfriend is gone and hasn’t really had time to fully be there for Jude.

Jude flips out on Jack when he finds him taking a nap in Stef and Lena’s bed. It isn’t soon after that, that we see a real bonding moment between the two where Jude gives Jack a pep talk about holding on & knowing that he will be okay even if the system is broken & Jack is socially inept. I can promise you that Jude will not be happy when he finds out that Jack is catfishing his sister.
