“The Fosters” Recap: Minor Offenses

Freeform’s hit drama “The Fosters” was as mesmerizing as ever last night! Each week has gotten better & better. This week we saw the return of Rosie O’Donnell, which was fantastic like always. As usual I am here to give you the rundown on all that happened & offer some of my insight. Let’s jump right into “Minor Offenses.”

Stef & Lena

It has officially been 10 days since Stef has gotten her procedure done. She is still recovering and trying to return to normal life. Normalcy is complicated when your wife feels guilty about having her body parts intact. This week we saw Lena struggle with not letting all that has happened affect her marriage, lucky for us Stef reaffirms her that she shouldn’t let anything change because she will always love her.

We also saw Stef struggle with some information about Ty (guest star Chris Warren) brought about by Mike, in an attempt to get Ty the adequate amount of jail time that he deserves. It seems that Ty is not only being charged with a hit-and-run but also grand theft, even though the vehicle was on loan to him. Thanks to a reminder from Callie about people not being “disposable” & an apology from AJ (recurring guest star Tom Williamson) about the whole situation, Mama Stef decides to make a statement on Ty’s behalf to help him get the sentence that he deserves.

Stef and Lena has some tiffs with some of the kids this week that I will get to below.

Callie

Callie had a big storyline this week. She has filmed a PSA about a foster care reform bill that Justina (guest star Kelli Williams) has introduced her to. When they show the video & present the idea to our mamas, Stef and Lena are not happy. They feel like they don’t even know Justina enough to trust the reasoning behind using Callie, not to mention the fact that none of them except Justina have read the bill. Justina tries to convince them by using the fact that they [Justina & Callie] have been “invited” to The White House for a foster care symposium.

The day after her fight with her moms, Callie visits Rita (recurring guest star Rosie O’Donnell) because she has decided to write her senior thesis on Rita and her efforts with Girls United. Callie tells Rita about the bill and her fight with her moms, while Rita is happy to see Callie finally act and sound like a normal teenager she is not happy that Callie is supporting this bill. Rita informs Callie that while the bill will have positive effects, it will also reallocate 50% of the government money to privatized homes. Privatized homes? Wait, wasn’t Justina against that? Oh yeah. She is.

Callie decides to finally ACTUALLY READ the bill and confront Justina about its contents. Justina gets defensive and starts spewing her mumbo-jumbo to brainwash Callie into thinking that this is a good idea. Well Callie goes with it & returns to Rita’s days later and recited verbatim what Justina told her. Rita gets upset because she can see that Callie is being taken advantage of & yet Callie is still blinded.

Callie also reconnects with AJ this week. They talk right after his apology to the family & they even visit AJ’s grandmother’s grave, where AJ tells Callie that the reason he has been avoiding her was because he was embarrassed by the fact that just when they were starting to actually connect he ran away. Callie lets him know that he still has a shot by grabbing onto his hand & planting a kiss on his lips. Does anybody else ship these two? Cause I do! AND I know that Braille is OTP but I am okay with this for the time being until the writer can figure out a way to make Braille work.

Brandon

Brandon’s storyline this week consisted of his potential relationship with Courtney (guest star Denyse Tontz). After last week’s bombshell that Courtney has a toddler, Brandon has decided that he maybe able to handle that. So starts the wooing & man does Brandon know how to woo! He writes an impromptu song called “Surfer Girl” for her while at work, which prompts her to let him know that despite his efforts she doesn’t have time to date. So Brandon makes time, he sets up a dinner for during their 15 break. The dinner goes great. Oh wait… actually no. It gets weird when Courtney’s baby daddy shows up with her son, Mason. The problem is that Courtney still has to work so the only solution is to have Brandon watch him. Which was kind of a disaster but it was a cute disaster that earned us a kiss between Brandon and Courtney.

Mariana & Jesus

Oh these twins! After last week’s reveal that the twins birth father Gabe (guest star Brandon Quinn) is on the California sex offenders list, Jesus confronts him out of anger without knowing the full situation. When Mariana comes clean to our mamas they of course freak out because like I said no one knows the full situation. I called this situation from the beginning; Stef has her buddies at the precinct check into Gabe & it gets revealed that the reason why he is an offender is because he was 18 when he was with and impregnated 15 yr old Ana. Which speaking of Ana (recurring guest star Alexandra Barreto), we see her return this week to provide the twins and the mommas with the full truth behind Gabe and her past with him.

We also got an awkward double date between Mari, Nick (guest star Louis Hunter), Jesus, & Lexi (recurring guest star Bianca Stantos) courtesy of Jesus who tells Nick that the only reason he will be able to take Mari out is if it becomes a double date. Jesus also finds a way to make sure that the date goes horribly wrong so that Mari doesn’t want to continue a relationship with Nick by pressuring him to race and drive recklessly. The only thing good about the date is that we also got a reconciliation between Mari and Lexi.

Final thoughts & questions

-Who else was happy to have Ana & Rita back this week?!

-Does anybody believe Justina’s invite to The White House? Do we think Justina is lying?

-Do we believe Justina helped cover up Jack’s injuries in his privatized group home? I mean… she put him in there in the first place. I definitely believe that she found a way to get the owners to convince him to stay.

Well there you have it. Next week will be insane! Freeform’s synopisis of next weeks “EQ” reads; “After a student objects to Brandon and Mat’s Romeo and Juliet musical, Lena has to tell Brandon that he might not be able to put the production up at school. Rita’s daughter reaches out to Callie after Rita refuses to take her calls. Stef teaches a class on handling emotion as part of a Youth Outreach Program.”
