“The Fosters” Recap: Rehearsal

Freeform’s “The Fosters” was so fantastic this week! It made me laugh, cry, and cheer like it does pretty much every week. As always I am here to break down all that was happening this week and share my thoughts with you! Let’s jump right into “Rehearsal.”

Stef and Lena

Stef and Lena had an interesting week, filled with boobs and hair. Stef is still feeling weird about her surgery now that she is starting to fully recover. She is struggling with whether she wants to get reconstruction or “go flat.” After Lena suggests talking to other survivors about their choices and decisions, the two mamas find themselves in an awkward situation. Lena invites an art teacher from school and her friend from a support group, both of whom went with a different choice on what to do with their breasts. The four discuss the reasoning behind their choices and when one of them offers the mamas a chance to see and feel the choices they made, something hilarious happens. Jesus walks in just as Lena is feeling the breasts on her employee. (Did the show forget that Lena WORKS with this woman?! Talk about awkward!)

The other big thing that happened for them this week was Stef’s haircut. She has decided to cut it in a pixie-like way and MAN TERI POLO LOOKS SO GREAT!!! She tells Lena that she has always wanted to cut her hair short but she has feared looking like a “dyke” but after everything that has happened, she refuses to be afraid anymore. This scene was so emotional to watch. The work that Teri Polo and Sherri Saum do on this show deserves WAY more recognition.

Callie

Callie’s big storyline this week involved Daphne (recurring guest star Daffany Clark) and Justina (guest star Kelli Williams). Callie is a character witness for Daph in her fight to get her daughter, Tasha, back. The judge thinks that in order to grant Daph custody she needs to get a full time job and get off of government money.

That’s where Justina comes in. Callie meets with her to talk about her senior thesis. (UMM remember when she was doing her thesis on Rita. What happened to that?) During their session, Justina spills some story about her childhood friend who got taken away from her home at a young age. Callie feels bad for her so she attempts to find this friend. What she stumbles upon is unsettling… Justina is that friend or so we think.

Callie then shares this news with Justina and we finally see Justina’s true colors. Turns out that the story she told Callie is true but she has been passing off this story as her own in the foster community because she learned after a while that people won’t open up their hearts or wallets unless they are affected by someone’s personal struggles. Callie asks if Justina is just using her and her story to “open wallets” and Justina tells her the truth. Yes, she is using Callie BUT Callie is actually using Justina too, to help get “Fost and Found” off the ground and to get Daphne a job. Which Callie only stays with Justina because she knows how important this job is to Daphne and her case for getting Tasha back.

Mariana and Jesus

Well it’s “Tech Week” and the drama surrounding Mari isn’t on stage. It seems that Mariana and Mat (recurring guest star Jordan Rodrigues) are not off book because they can’t stop fighting long enough to rehearse. Mat and Nick (guest star Louis Hunter) get in a little tiff, which in turn causes Zoey (guest star Anna Grace Barlow) to tell Nick that the reason Mat and Mariana broke up was because Mari cheated on him. This freaks Nick out and causes him to reconsider his relationship. Mari confronts Mat about this and Mat swears that he didn’t say a word to Zoey about what happened between Mari and Wyatt. The fallout of this scene causes Brandon to go have a sweet one-on-one with Mari, where he tells her not to be ashamed about what happened because we have all made stupid mistakes. He tells her that he had sex with someone and he regrets it… which Callie overhears and thinks is about her.

The next rehearsal Mat apologizes and tells Mari that it turns out Wyatt told Taylia and Taylia is the one who told Zoey. Mari forgives him and begins to rehearse their song with Brandon, where sparks were flying so much so that they ended the song with a kiss. Mari and Mat perform with such chemistry that it just makes me want them to get back together already! Hopefully they do next week.

The other big thing this week was Gabe (guest star Brandon Quinn), who after receiving letter of support from the twins and Ana’s family decides with a little push from Stef to get to know the twins. He gets to do this by helping Jesus out with building the set. He gets to hang out with Jesus all week and get to know him. He mentions to Jesus that the reason he never reached out, besides it being illegal, was the fact that he doesn’t know how to be a parent. (Look Gabe… Ana doesn’t really either which is why I love that she has struck up a friendship with the Adams-Foster clan! You can too eventually.)

We get to see a short scene between Gabe and Mari where Mari invites Gabe to opening night. He wants to come & support her because he wants to be apart of the twins life once he is cleared to. BUT THEN… the cops show up because Gabe forgot to set the alarm. The cops ask to see some ID and Mari tries her best to persuade them that they don’t really need it. It doesn’t work. They get their IDs and they arrest Gabe for being around a minor without an adult present. This storyline better get cleared up by the finale because I actually really like Gabe.

Brandon

Brandon’s drama this week came from the Cortney secret and Callie. Cort has been making trips to come see Brandon and the progress he is making with the show. On her first visit Mama Stef just so happens to see their kiss goodbye. Which prompts the Mamas to have a sitdown with Brandon and discuss the fact that they are okay with him dating her as long as they wait to have sex until B is 18 because they don’t want what happened with Gabe to happen to Cort if someone reports it. The second time Cort visits, Callie sees a baby store rewards card on her keychain and confronts Brandon about it. He tells her that it is none of her business and that everything will work out.

The other thing going on with Brandon was the fact that Callie overheard B tell Mari about his regret over having sex with someone. Callie assumes that he was talking about her, that’s when he tells her about Dani. Remember her? Mike’s ex that took advantage of B in season 2. Honestly it is about time that someone besides the parentals found out. Callie tells him that she felt ashamed and guilty after the whole Liam thing. They talk of Braille and whatnot. Then they share a nice hug.
