“The Fosters” Recap: The Show

Freeform’s “The Fosters” aired a very special episode this week! The musical that Brandon has been working on has finally come to fruition and just like that, our favorite show put out a musical episode that was simply FANTASTIC! Let’s jump into all the drama that was happening on and off stage at “The Show.”

This recap isn’t gonna be normal because this wasn’t a normal episode so I’m gonna include my “review” of “R+J: A Romeo & Juliet Tale” and it’s musical numbers at the end. The other flashback and present storyline will be presented like normal.

Brandon & Callie
Braille sang a duet a few days before the performance. I’m not a huge Braille shipper BUT this scene was intense. Callie can’t sleep one night so she wanders downstairs to the garage to see what Brandon is doing up so late. Well he is working on “Love Will Light the Day” & asks for help with the harmonies. They sing. They connect. The chemistry is amazing. So amazing that they run out to attempt and tell the mamas about what they did (you know the sex and all) until they realize how stupid that it because it’s too late to tell. This scene was a lot. It’s tough to watch because I would love to ship Braille. I love their chemistry but at this point in their lives they are considered family. I want them to ultimately end up together but not right now. Please forgive me avid Braille shippers.

The other big thing with Brandon is that during the performance he starts to see himself as Romeo and both Callie and Cortney (guest star Denyse Tontz) as his Juliet. Who will he end up choosing?

Jude
Jude’s storyline this week was very Jack (guest star Tanner Buchanan) centric. Jack is staying with the Adams-Fosters for a few days since his group home got shut down. The first night he is there, Jude keeps him up at night by crying about his breakup with Connor. Jack gives his sympathy and Jude tells him that he is glad that Jack is there for the next few days and that he will find a great home soon.

The next time we see Jude and Jack they are taking out their aggression by head-banging and screaming. While screaming Jude starts to break down in tears. (Which was so sad to watch. Hayden Byerly did a really great job in this episode!) That is when the unthinkable happens… Jack kisses Jude.

Jack regrets kissing Jude immediately and goes to talk to Callie about it. Callie tells him to tell Jude the truth. So that’s what Jack tries to do before he leaves to go to his new home but before he can get the truth out Jude gives him a “pay-as-you-go” phone for him to keep in touch. They share a sweet hug & Jude tell him thank you for helping him realize that he may not be over Connor but because of Jack he knows that eventually he can.

At the show, Jude texts Jack to ask how his new home is and doesn’t get a reply. Why? Find out below.

Stef
Stef’s storyline was set in the present this week. She has to miss because she is called on a domestic dispute call. Where at? Oh just the house that she rescued Jude, Callie, & Brandon from in the pilot. Well turns out that the guy still has a temper. Lucky for Stef she knows that she can sneak in through the back to apprehend the suspect.

So she does. When she opens the door, the assailant fires his gun at her. MAMA STEF IS SAFE! Luckily she understands, “wear the vest, protect your chest.” That can’t be said for the shooter because he gets a minor shot to his body and promptly arrested.

Stef goes to check the rest of the house because the wife is not inside anymore. Stef seeing a body lying on the floor in a bedroom after she steps on a pair of glasses. Who does this body belong to? OH JUST… Jack. That’s right folks Jack is no longer with us. Stef sees that it’s him and starts to break down. That’s how we end this week.

Mariana
Mariana’s storyline happens during intermission. She is upset because she has started to realize that she still loves Mat. (recurring guest star Jordan Rodriguez) Lucky for her and the rest of the Matiana shippers… Mat still loves her too! But Mat tells her he was unsure because she never responded to his letter. What letter?

Well apparently after last week’s rehearsal, he left her a note proclaiming his love. But someone took that note. Zoey? Nick? My guess is Nick (guest star Louis Hunter) because we see him give the note a glance of disgust.

Elsewhere/ Final Thoughts
-MIKE AND ANA HELD HANDS! I SHIP THIS SO HARD!!!
-WHERE HAS AJ BEEN?! I miss him.
-I wanted some clarity on if Gabe got out of jail but I can wait… I guess.
-The promo for next week looks insane. I CAN’T WAIT.

R+J: A Romeo & Juliet Tale
The musical part of the episode was SO GREAT!!! Guest stars both new and old star in the show. The cast was better than expected, newcomer guest Corbin Bleu and returnees Jordan RodreiguezAnna Grace Barlow, Garrett Clayton and Ashley Argota plus series regular Cierra Ramirez were the highlights of the episode!

Another MAJOR highlight is that of the music. Brad Hooks wrote 12 original musical numbers that encompasses all that I love about musical theatre! Catchy, beautiful lyrics, and a fantastic sound. The soundtrack is a must have for musical theatre and Fosters fans alike. It is actually available now on iTunes. So BUY IT!!!

The set design, costumes, and staging both theatrically and camera wise was another excellent quality of the show that really stuck with me. Bradley Bredeweg has done an incredible job of bringing the quality of live theatre to the screen.

If you want to see an extended version of the musical you can watch a 35 min one on the Freeform app for free!

NEXT WEEK IS THE SEASON 3 FINALE!!! “Kingdom Come” looks like it will be a another great finale that I can’t wait to watch. Be sure to follow PopHeartsTV on all major social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and now Tumblr by searching @PopHeartsTV!
