Congrats on your most recent single Best Friends! The soul-pop sound is very catchy. Tell me where you got your inspiration for this song.
Devin Kirtz: I went to Mexico for my manager’s bachelor party actually. I had “hanganxeity,” I don’t have a better word to describe it. We partied way too much and had the day after scaries. It was one of those realizations, me and you, looking in the mirror we gotta get through this and I don’t know I kind of just wrote a love song to myself.
You played professional soccer for the New York Red Bulls but then you left the game of sports to pursue your passion for music. What made you decide to pursue music full-time?
It was one of those things where I was putting 50% into music and 50% into soccer and I had to make a choice. It wasn’t even a question for me. I always knew that music was my absolute passion and then I just kind of jumped head first.
You have worked with so many incredible producers and have written for so many talented artists like Zayn, Sam Hunt, and Boyz II Men, to name a few. Who was your favorite artist that you’ve been able to work with? Can you say?
I don’t know if I have a favorite but if I had to choose, it would be Wyclef Jean. He’s the most creative, insane, amazing person of all time.
What is your favorite part about the songwriting process?
When I’m in the middle of a song that I know is working and I’m like “oh my gosh we got one” and then there is this energy in the studio. It’s not even necessarily finishing it or starting it but it’s in the middle when you just realize that you have something special.
Tell me a little bit more about your six month residency at The Bellagio in Las Vegas? That sounds like such an amazing experience.
It was wild…that was back when the world was open. We played at the Hyde in the Bellagio. We played for like three hours, it was the craziest energy. I never wanted it to end.
I know we live in a crazy world right now, so what is one thing you miss most about performing for a crowd?
I miss hearing people sing back, like something that you wrote, that is my favorite feeling. When you hear the whole crowd singing the song that you wrote back to you. It’s not even the size of the crowd that matters, I almost prefer some of the intimate performances more.
How have you been spending your time in quarantine?
I’m actually working on setting five Guinness Book World soccer records. They are really random soccer records that I’m doing, but I’ll never be able to stop playing.
What does the future look like for you? What are your future goals music wise, career wise?
I’m looking to take over the world in every way, shape and form. No, but really with a song like Best Friends, I am really excited for people to have a self-love song during a time when people need it the most.
