In addition to premiering the new song, we had a chance to catch up with the busy Texas native. Macy was discovered by Kent Wells, a producer best known for his work with Dolly Parton.
Check out the our interview below, along with the premiere of I Miss You.
We are very excited to be premiering I Miss You. Talk about this song, what does it mean to you?
Macy: “I’m excited that y’all are premiering it! Thank you! 🙂
The setting of I Miss You is clearly after a breakup. Instead of your typical breakup song about a love done wrong, I Miss You walks you through every cherished moment of the past and relishes on it.
It’s exciting to release a song that is saying all the internal thoughts you often mill over in your head after a break-up. Usually you don’t say it out loud because you’re supposed to be tough and move on in a flash. When really it’s a process of even figuring out how you feel. It’s okay to be vulnerable and hold on to the hurt of heartbreak for a while. If that’s the only piece of that person and past relationship you have left. It’s part of healing and that’s healthy.
Just sharing that reassurance to someone through a song is pretty cool to me.”
How did the opportunity come to cut a song written by Carly Pearce?
“A member of my team is friends with many incredible publishers in Nashville. This song was sent to her by one. She emailed it to me one day and said she could totally hear me singing it. The demo caught my attention immediately with the first line of lyrics.
It’s just such a powerful image that really struck me on what a great song I Miss You is. It wasn’t until after we recorded it and we requested lyrics to make sure I sang the words correctly (afterwards-weird I know haha) that I found out Carly had been a writer on it.
It definitely didn’t surprise me though, she’s such a talented songwriter.”
Your video for Don’t Be The Reason earned nearly half a million YouTube views! Can you talk about the success of the video?
“That many views is so crazy to me. I appreciate it so much!
I think people just really liked the cinematic and “Pinterest Couple” feel we tried to capture of a budding relationship. Because of the great textures and different settings like the carnival midway within the video I feel like it also makes it seem like a much bigger production than it was.
Other than me and my faux beau we had a crew of only three people helping to shoot the video. During the county fair shots we had one hand held video camera to remain super low profile. We didn’t want to cause a scene and get kicked out haha!
Needless to say we had tons of fun creating it. It truly is so exciting to see that other people are enjoying it too!”
What has it been like for you to maintain a life in college, sorority and having a career in music? How do you manage to balance it all?
Macy Martin: “It has definitely not always easy, but every little moment of my college experience has been worth it. I’m so grateful to have had that experience while having a professional career.
I learned a lot simultaneously in both areas. I feel I have gotten to experience a live application of my knowledge. From my classes to my career and vice versa of my experiences in the field and applying them to concepts we’re currently covering in my “Artist Management” course.
The best thing I found that helped me manage all the things of the last four years has been a ban.do hardcover planner. You’ll never catch me without it in my bag!”
We know you are very much a philanthropist and started your first non-profit in the second grade. Can you share a little bit about Macy’s Toy Box?
“Yes 🙂 It all started when I needed to clean out my toy box circa early 2005. I had to choose what toys to get rid of. And because the character Sid from Toy Story traumatized me, I was adamant that we couldn’t sell the toys because they’d somehow end up with the mean kid.
Still needing to find a new home for my toys, my parents and I took to our dial-up internet and started looking for places that took gently used toys. The first places that we donated to were my hometown’s fire and police departments as they keep toys for when children are in emergency situations.
Now in 2020 we have expanded our primary reach from first responders to children’s hospitals. We take in brand new all embroidered 10 inch teddy bears. We call them Tumbles aka our mascot but of course the kids name them whatever the please.
Now at 22-years-old, for me continuing Macy’s Toy Box in the way we have is an honor to share comfort and peace in a small way to a child and their family going through a difficult journey.
I had a healthy and happy childhood. If I can help in a tiny way to contribute to one of those aspects for another kiddo and their loved ones, that’s our goal accomplished. It’s greater than any gift we could ever give.”
