We had the opportunity to talk with singer PI3RCE! Her music talks about important issues happening in society today. Keep reading to get to know her!
Your new EP Influencers is going to be released in 2020. What was the inspiration behind this song?
Influencers is a really out there track, can’t wait for you to hear it, it’s super out of the box. It’s a very honest out there look into my personal experience with social media. It speaks about a lot of struggles within my career, keeping a life-work balance with social media since my career does depend on it. That can really mess up my personal life and it has done so a lot in the past. That’s a little bit on what the song focuses on but it also has the broader issue of social media in our culture. However, I do kind of focus on it as a personal experience and you’ll see that in the verses. The chorus is more broad. It’s about how I don’t think we’re really ready for what ‘influencers’ mean for our culture and especially for our industry.
It’s been a complete shift in our culture. It is kind of fading a little bit but it’s more that we now have online celebrities. They are purely because of the internet and that is a very unique thing that has become normalized. As soon as it happened it became normal and so I don’t know if we’re really ready for what that means for us. So that is what the song focuses on as well.
You have a cool and different style, is there someone or something that inspired this look?
I really just kind of started exploring different styles. I really found the color pink to be attractive. Since I’ve always been kind of gothic, it’s been a cool way for me to express my uber femininity and kind of dive into that other side of myself. I’m also really into pastel goth culture and so kind of get into style as well. It’s been very cool because it’s a small community but the girls who live it are freaking amazing! So I’ve loved being part of that community as well. I’m really into anime, so my look is very much inspired by Princess Peach as well as Sailor Moon. It’s just very feminine and girly but I definitely want to convey that I can kick your ass! It’s been a cool way to kind of explore the gothic and the princess side of myself.
At a young age you started your own charity. Could you talk about what it is and why you decided to start it?
I suffered a traumatic brain injury when I was sixteen. In high school, I was in a dance performance and I was kicked in the face so hard that I blacked out. I had almost irreparable brain damage. For an entire year, I had to be out of all school, all extracurricular activities. I couldn’t really see people, I could barely even walk outside without having serious mental problems. Through that struggle, I realized, I’m going through so much pain, anxiety, depression and isolation myself, I can’t imagine what other people, who have worse issues, are going through. So, I started a charity selling repurposed vintage clothing and all the proceeds go to brain cancer patients. I’m really proud of my contribution, I helped some wonderful people and I just wish I could’ve done more but it was my first attempt of really reaching into that world.
That’s something I want to continue with my music and I have a whole song about my issues with mental health as well as my repercussions from having the brain injury. I have serious panic attacks as well as depression and anxiety. I wrote an entire song dedicated to that. I’m hoping that people will feel not alone because my biggest thing through that time was I felt like such a freak. Like I had a problem that never existed before because it was not spoken about at the time, mental health wasn’t really a thing people really talked about as much as they do now. So, I’m hoping to work with the American Brain Injury Association and really try to do some more outreach and help people with the same issues I went through.
You have collaborated with fashion and beauty brands from Winky Lux to Diff Eyewear. What is it like collaborating with big brands like that?
It’s always been one of my passions. I was a fashion blogger at sixteen when I got the brain injury. The only thing I had was the internet and I couldn’t even really use it that much because it was damaging for my neurons and my brain waves. I had an hour a day maybe I could go online and I started a fashion blog and I started posting looks and really focusing on brand outreach.
When I got better, I was almost able to make it a full time job and I was a professional fashion blogger for a while. That’s something I still love doing, I’m partnering with a few really awesome brands right now. We’re working on some cool products and advertisements for the new year that kind of surround my new look. I’ve really enjoyed it, it’s one of my favorite things, to be able to connect with a company I believe in and represent them publicly.
Since working with these companies, have you ever thought about creating your own brand?
Oh my gosh, I would love to! I’ve always been into fashion design since I was a little girl. I just wanted to be the editor of Vogue Magazine, that’s all I wanted. I was really close to going to fashion school but I’m kind of considering business at the moment. There are definitely plans for that in the future and it’s definitely going to be something really wild. I’m not sure what but I’m very excited to explore that possibility.
Do you have a favorite brand or music artist you would hope to work with someday?
Right now, my favorite brand is definitely Dolls Kill and their own brand Sugar Thrillz. They are like everything about my brand. They’re super princess and super dark, very 2000s and angsty. My entire closet is only Dolls Kill and it’s really embarrassing. Honestly, I’d love to work with Doja Cat because she’s hilarious. I’d also love to work with Kim Petras because she is a queen and I think we could destroy the world together.
Is there more music, along with Influencer, or new projects to expect in 2020?
Yes, absolutely! The three singles I released this year and the coming year are not going to be the only songs on the album. I have to hidden tracks that I’m so excited for people to hear! One is a gorgeous ballad that literally feels like you’re swimming in hot coffee. The other one is that really honest depiction of mental health, my brain injury and the time I went through that but it’s a very cool, dark pop song. So, I’m really excited for people to hear it because it’s kind of a new sound, it’s a little bit Billie Eilish but in my own way. I’m very excited and I think everyone is really going to jam out to that one.
