I had the chance to chat with up-and-coming singer and songwriter Cloe Wilder about her new single and music video Crying When I Shouldn’t premiering exclusively on Pop Hearts TV!
For Crying When I Shouldn’t, Cloe worked in collaboration with Billie Eilish’s mixing and mastering team, the three times Grammy Award winners Rob Kinelski and John Greenham.
You can hear the similarities between Cloe and Billie in the latest single, but at only 14-years-old her voice is beyond her years. Her voice is ethereal with tones of pop laced in.
When we first heard about Cloe we couldn’t wait to learn more about her and her upcoming music. Watch the premiere of Crying When I Shouldn’t and learn more below in our Q&A with the next big thing in music!
Talk about your new single and video, “Crying When I Shouldn’t.” Was there an inspiration, feeling or story behind the single and video?
Cloe: “I really had no idea what I was talking about. I hopped in the studio with Eric Scullin and just said what felt right. Those are my favorite types of sessions. I guess I was just frustrated. Friends are frustrating. Losing friends is frustrating – and getting upset over them is frustrating.”
Your first single, “Overthinking” received 450k views, what a huge accomplishment! What were your thoughts on people being so excited right off the bat?
Cloe: “Thank you! I was honestly shocked. I wasn’t too sure how people would like “Overthinking”. I’m so grateful for the response.”
Take us through your process, do you go into the studio with music already written, or do you go in and figure it out once you get into the studio?
Cloe: “I figure it out once I’m in there! I very rarely have a concept. I only work with people I trust, so I feel comfortable having a conversation until we find something we like. It’s pretty natural!”
Are you currently working on an EP or album? What can fans expect from it?
Cloe: “YES! It’s very different. I think people are expecting something way more poppy… it’s not that, at all.”
You have done covers of Sasha Sloan and Billie Eilish, both who have insane songwriting skills and vocals. What’s it like to have those in the industry say your talent level is on par with theirs, especially at such a young age?
Cloe: “It’s just the most incredible feeling. Being in the same category as people you admire is really something else.”
You have worked with Billie’s team previously, is Billie someone you would want to work directly with on a song or project? Anything you would you want to do specifically?
Cloe: “Oh yes! I think Billie is doing so much for the industry. She’s representing the multitude of young indie artists. I would love to write on one of her projects.”
When your family first discovered your passion for singing, they were surprised. Were you surprised as well? Or did you always know you had an interest in music?
Cloe: “My family and I went through it together. I’d always had a passion for music, nobody thought I’d take it this far, though. My mom is so supportive and I feel like she always knew.”
What do you hope to accomplish over the next few months? Year?
Cloe: “I really want to fine-tune this EP. I want it to be as perfect as possible. After that releases, I would absolutely love to tour.”
