Here Are the Easter Eggs You Missed From the “You Need To Calm Down Music” Video

Taylor Swift’s new music video for You Need To Calm Down is out and full of hidden Easter eggs just waiting to be discovered by fellow Swifties.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in May, she talked about the clues she drops for her fans.

‘A lot of the time, I’ll pick something that symbolizes something else, like I’ll pick a snake as the mascot for feeling misunderstood or, you know, being somebody who’s not going to strike unless they’re stepped on…or a butterfly, which is like breaking free of that darkness and fluttering into the light,’ she said.

‘I love to communicate through Easter eggs. I think the best messages are the cryptic ones,’ she said in an interview with the magazine.

So, without further introduction. Let’s talk about some of the clues that we do know:

  • There are 13 stars on her purple jacket and there is a 13 on her necklace; her sunglasses also have 13 pearls.
  • In the opening scene of the video there is a bowl of red dice. If you look can count at the spead of light the dice add up to 67. On the day of the music video release, there were 67 days until her album comes out on August 23rd.
  • Ryan Reynolds is seen painting Stonewall Inn, the legendary gay bar and landmark in New York City. The riots at Stonewall Inn launched the gay rights movements in the United States. Swift also made a surprise appearance before the video release celebrating the 50th anniversary of the riots; she performed her song Shake It Off.
  • In 1989, Cher said in an interview: “My mom said to me, “You know, sweetheart, one day you should settle down and marry a rich man.” I said, “Mom, I am a rich man.”‘ A picture of that quote is hanging in Taylor’s trailer in the video.
  • Hayley Kiyoko shoots an arrow at a target and it lands on the number five. Historically, some of Swift’s saddest songs have been the fifth track on her albums. Swift also said in her ET interview that there would be some “really sad songs” on the album.
  • Ellen DeGeneres is spotted getting a tattoo that reads “Cruel Summer” by Adam Lambert. If fans watched Taylor Swift on the Ellen DeGeneres Show a couple of weeks ago, it’s possible the entire show was one giant Easter egg itself.
