Taylor Grey Interview: New Music Video and Balancing Life

Taylor Grey released her new music video for the single COMPLIC8ED. It’s the first official music video released from the singer since 2017!

COMPLIC8ED is a fun and upbeat song about the difficulties that come along with relationships. Could you describe more what the song means to you?

The idea for the song came when I was just getting really annoyed by the “I don’t wanna make things complicated” trope when you’re trying to be with some, become more than friends, etc. I was just thinking – why not? Literally why not make it complicated? I think so many great relationships – romantic or friendships – can happen when you aren’t married to doing the easy thing.

What was the process of creating your first official music video since 2017? How did you feel getting back into the space?

This video was a lot more hands-on for me. I kept seeing this image (inspired by Netflix’s End of the F***ing World) of me standing in the middle of nowhere in a disheveled wedding dress and, I knew, I wanted that to be the establishing shot. I actually hand wrote a shot list with illustrations during a class in the fall. And then I brought it to my team, and Alfy, the director, helped me reign in the vision.

Since starting your music career, what have been some of your favorite moments or experiences that come along with it?

100% touring. Seeing people sing along to my songs and coming up to meet me after the shows, I don’t really know how to describe how surreal that is.

Was there a moment early on when you knew this career path of music is what you wanted to do? What was it or when was it? How did you know?

To be honest, no. I have always been a songwriter and regardless of what happens, I will always write songs, even just for me. I’m just doing what feels right and what I want at the moment. That’s why my music style changes from project to project. Music has always been intuitive for me, meaning I never had a moment when I realized it was my passion – it was just always part of my life and I always knew I’d do something with it whether people like it and listen to it or not.

What were some of the challenges of pursuing a music career while also being at Stanford University?

Time. Of course, I can’t be touring or in the studio like someone who wasn’t in school. But it’s also time with things like social media and interacting with supporters because at least, for me, social media takes so long as I want to be able to respond to everyone so I think that’s the hardest part. And the fact that stress can sometimes just zap your creativity. Although I definitely find myself writing more music during finals week – probably procrastination though.

What was it like being able to tour and sharing the stage with so many other great artists like Fall Out Boy, Walk the Moon, and many more? What did you learn from them?

There’s an energy that they are able to create on stage that’s impossible to fake or fabricate – you have to feel it. I honestly feel like an imposter because I’m totally a fangirl and will watch everyone I open for’s sets and think to myself how on earth did I get free tickets to this show because I forget I actually “worked” earlier on.

Along with your new song COMPLIC8ED and the music video, what can fans look forward to seeing from you in the near future?

I’ve been living in Florence for the past two months studying and, unfortunately, I haven’t touched a musical instrument during that time. But I think being away and being in a new country will give me perspective and new energy when I come back next month. I’m excited to work on and share more new music soon!

Keep up with Taylor Grey on all her social media!
