Singer & Songwriter Natalie Taylor Gray Talks Debut Single Liar, EP and Upcoming Shows

I had the opportunity to speak to London-based singer/songwriter Natalie Taylor Gray about her new music, the process behind creating and what we can expect in the future.

Thank you for joining us, Natalie! Let’s begin with how you broke into the music industry.

That’s actually a very great question! When I was about 14, I was in girl’s groups and duo groups or a group with two guys and two girls. I’ve always been writing and about two years ago, I made the decision to do my own thing and start writing again. My past was very much musical theater and when I was in these girl groups I hated everyone controlling me. I was lucky enough to find a great manager and it has been a really great response so far.

You recently released your debut single, ‘Liar.’ What inspired you to write this song?

When I was about 18, I met this guy in London and he so happened to work for a big film producer and an actress. He took me out to a show and we ended up going out together and ironically, I also began working for this film director and actress. Eventually, I realized he was lying to me, making things up and it was very crazy. I was very naïve at the time and now, 10 years later, I have realized a lot from that time. So, this song is about that guy and that time in my life.

What all goes into the songwriting and recording process? What is your favorite part of releasing a new song?

Releasing a new song is exciting and scary at the same time. You are completely bearing your soul and you aren’t sure how the audience is going to respond but it is also empowering because you write down everything you have wanted to say and it is finally all out. That is my favorite part! As far as the process, it stems with an idea and the notes on my phone. I will write a load of stuff down whether it’s an idea or a melody.

Can you talk about the story behind your new EP, ‘Sick Kind of Love?’

My whole EP is basically around four types of relationships. It was based on the liar, on myself and if I am being true to myself, then a love-hate relationship and the fourth one about starting a fire and that incredible chemistry.

You also just released a new music video for your song, ‘Am I Being Honest.’ The video was incredible. What is the creative process that goes behind a music video?

This is my favorite bit of creating! When I wrote this song, I had a vision of making it pure and honest – really showing who I am. I love parks and roaming hills and visiting flower shops, so I wanted the video to reflect this. We would walk to the location and just film it. Primrose Hill was a perfect location to shoot because it is so quirky and colorful, it really showed who I am.

Do you see yourself going on tour anytime soon?

My team is working on it right now! I just signed with management which is amazing and I actually have a headline show at Pizza Express Live, which is an amazing venue in London. If you look at my socials, I will be sharing details on there soon!

What is your dream venue to play?

Wow, I would have to say Madison Square Garden. That is definitely the dream. I also love Royal Albert Hall and the Staples Center but I am going to have to go with Madison Square Garden.

Who has inspired you in the industry that you have always looked up to?

My number one is Amy Winehouse, something about her vulnerability is so true and authentic. I believe she changed the world of music. I would also say Ella Fitzgerald and I love Michael Bublé.

Do you have any advice for people looking to break into the industry?

I would say 100% believe in yourself and stay authentic to who you are. Stay away from negatives and remove that from your life. Focus really hard on what you want to achieve and do what you love.
