Neil Davis Talks New Music, Working with Lauren Daigle in New Interview

We had the opportunity to chat with singer, Neil Davis, about his new single “Chasing You,” what it’s been like working with some of the most incredible names in the industry and what the writing and recording process was like for this song. We had a great time getting to know more about him and his incredible music career. Enjoy the interview!

Let’s talk about your new single, “Chasing You.” Can you tell everyone what it’s about?

Sure! It’s about pursuing the things that you really want in life. I started writing Chasing You with more of a romantic stance, but then it’s also about me chasing me dreams and just hitting the pavement in New York City – and just not giving up. The song includes Elliot Jacobson on drums and is co-produced by Christian Medice.

What was it like working with these incredible people in the industry?

It was really fun, and a pretty easy process. I think Elliot is one of the best drummers in town, so I sought him out after hearing a bunch of his other work.  He also produces other artists and writes too. He just gets songs. So, I was really excited to work with him. Christian had produced a bunch of stuff for a friend of mine years ago, so that’s how I found him. I recorded Chasing You and a few other songs totally live, and pretty raw.  So at the end of that process I felt like it just needed an extra spark – which is where Christian came in. He gets pop, and knows how to bring a song to life. He also has gone on to work with huge artists like P!nk, so who know’s if I’ll ever get him again!

What was the inspiration behind this song?

The best way I can describe the inspiration behind Chasing You, is feeling like some days you’re so close to something – and then the next day it can feel like it’s completely gone. It’s this whole ‘hard to get’ theme. Whether it’s with people, or your goals and dreams. I’ve been going after music for a long time and I’m still chasing it! I think I always will be so I felt like it was an on-going theme in my life. Even with relationships. It’s like, okay – what is going to stick?!

What was the writing and recording process like for this song? Was it any different from other songs you’ve done?

It was pretty organic, and quick. I wrote Chasing You in one sitting – at my piano. I actually wrote it a few years ago but felt like right now was the most relevant time to release it. It also feels new to me because I’m just now getting to perform it live and talk about it- so it’s all feeling exciting and new.

Your year began with a debut at Carnegie Hall, singing with 2x Grammy Award Winner, Lauren Daigle. What was this amazing experience like?

It was one of the most unforgettable, and beautiful performance experiences I’ve ever had. Carnegie Hall itself, is just a dream to sing in. The acoustics, the history. All of it. So to be looking up, singing in that venue-  it was emotional. And to top it off, to be able to do it with Lauren – was incredible. I feel lucky to have been able to spend even just a little time with her and her music, just before she won all of these Grammys and awards! She’s a force. I’m so excited for her.

Are you working on any new music at the moment?

I actually am! I’m always writing and singing. It’s sort of my daily meditation – but I guess you can call it music meditation. Especially if there’s something I need to get out emotionally or if I’m inspired by something, it usually goes right into music. But, I’m definitely focusing on releasing new music that i’ve already recorded – and I’ve got a bunch up my sleeve. So I’m planning for my next new music releases and creative things to go with it like videos, and hopefully more tour dates!

Where do you see yourself in five years in your career?

Hopefully still doing everything i’m doing now, just on a bigger scale. Definitely in a music career, but with multiple avenues. I’d love to write for other artists, do some tv acting, maybe even Broadway at some point. The sky is the limit!

Any advice you’d like to give fans hoping to chase a similar dream?

If you put your mind to it, you can really do anything! I’m completely independent. It takes a lot of focus, sacrifice, and drive. And knowing that not everything is for you. but the right thing will be for you. Also, don’t think you have to wait on anyone to get things rolling – because you are your strongest advocate. Especially in this day and age, where all of the tools are at our fingertips. The answers are in you, or all around you! Also, don’t compare yourself to others.  Tell your own story. Be your own unique self, because that’s what makes you YOU!
