“Once Upon A Time” S6 EP1 Recap: The Savior

Welcome back Oncers! Who else was going thru Storybrooke withdrawal this summer? I know I was and man did all our heroes and villains come back with a wicked bang! New season, new recap format!

THE NOSTALGIA IS REAL

Belle and Rumple have been through a roller coaster romance and Rumple can still get us to cheer for him, even when we so don’t want to…he has now traveled into Belle’s dream world (care of Hyde and a mystery guide named Morpheus) in order to wake her from the self-induced sleeping curse. Morpheus warns Rumple he must hurry or Belle will stay in the dream state permanently.

Rumple’s goal is to make Belle fall back in love him. Cue pulling of the heartstrings as the Beauty and the Beast theme song plays and Rumple transforms Belle into the famous yellow gown. They dance and for a moment we all believe in the power of love again.

WHAT THE STORYBROOKE?

Belle and Rumple’s dance through memory lane ends abruptly as dream Belle suddenly remembers why she’s in this dream state in the first place: all of Rumple’s lies and betrayals. Darn it, Rumple! You almost made all of us forget your terrible past! But the real What The Storybrooke moment comes when Morpheus interrupts to tell Belle and Rumple he is actually THEIR CHILD! Excuse me?!

How this makes legitimate sense, no one quite knows yet. But at this point, Morpheus is somehow baby RumpBelle all grown up and invading dreams. Actually it was part his dream too. And he has a warning for his mother: stay away from Rumple. He will ruin their family like he ruined his first, baby RumpBelle explains.

He kisses his mother on the forehead and she awakens. Belle heads back to Storybrooke single and loving it while Rumple is left to wallow in rejection.

VICIOUS VILLAINS

Hyde has taken over Storybrooke and apparently Rumple is the one who can give away the town. So first things to do, invite all his lost story friends to town. But someone driving the flying ship is a terrible driver and crashes them in the forest.  Hyde warns the heroes that there’s nothing more dangerous than an untold story.

Long story short, Snow pays this no mind and invites all the new characters to Granny’s for food and shelter. And Emma speaks to a girl that used to be an Oracle, who tells Emma these crazy visions she’s been having is her future…and it’s not looking very bright.

WHY ARE WE ALL YELLING?!

This leads us to Emma…

GIRL, WHY HAVEN’T YOU LEARNED TO BE HONEST WITH YOUR HOT BOYFRIEND AND FAMILY ABOUT WHAT’S GOING ON WITH YOU?!?! TELL THEM ABOUT YOUR NEWLY TWITCHING HAND AND CRAZY BATTLE DREAMS!! AND STOP TELLING HOOK YOU NEED TO BE ALONE, YOU ALL LITERALLY WENT TO HELL AND BACK FOR EACH OTHER!

So Emma suddenly has these visions where she’s fighting a mystery hooded character and gets stabbed with a sword, apparently foretelling her impending demise. Emma decides not to tell family, friends or hot boyfriend Hook about her problems and instead decides to deal with them on her own (because that’s worked out so well for her in the last five seasons *sarcasm*). And to add insult to injury, she seeks the help of Hyde (because this guy seems honest and honorable *more sarcasm*). He tells her to follow the red bird and she’ll find the answers she seeks.

Once she finds the red bird, it leads her to the ex-Oracle who informs her that this battle she’s seeing is her future and how she will die. First of all, I’m still not convinced this girl isn’t Jafar. We saw Jafar earlier in the episode confronting Aladdin about his Savior status. So obviously he’s got it out for Saviors and is known to have a pet bird.

Second, even if it’s not Jafar, we don’t know anything about these new untold story characters. And if they’re anything like Hyde, they’re not to be completely trusted.

NOW WHAT?

The Evil Queen is back and ready to cause some trouble. When Regina and Zelena aren’t cutting it as roomies, Zelena and Baby Robin head back to her house only to be greeted by the Evil Queen and two green apple martinis.   At least the girl knows a good drink, even if she is more evil than she’s ever been. So now the question gets to be, where does Zelena’s heart lie, with her newly do-gooder sister Regina or The Evil Queen that speaks to her wicked side?

I was actually warming up to Zelena at the beginning of the episode because she was trying with Regina. It’ll always be hard to completely forget that she tricked Robin into sleeping with her as Marion and getting herself pregnant, all to punish Regina because of Cora’s ill-parenting, but I digress. Regina has been the character with the most growth in the series and I loved we still see her inner struggle. But will it be enough to be completely good?

My theory is that it won’t and I’m curious to see who the hooded figure fighting Emma will be. The smoke that made her sword disappear was kind of a red-purple, which is Regina’s color tone. We didn’t see her run up to Emma like Snow, Charming and Hook in her visions. Could this be the villain to Emma’s Savior? It’s a wild guess true, but only time will tell…

Until next time Oncers! Let me know in the comments and via Twitter (@kristincarole13) what you thought of the premiere episode! Will Emma truly meet her death? Will Zelena become #TeamEvilQueen?
