Ruby is back! After her wolf form encounter with our heroes last week, she wakes up in their apartment, having Dorothy’s fabric in tow.

Flashback to Oz where Ruby and Mulan are searching for Ruby’s pack. They lose the scent again but encounter Toto and Dorothy. Toto starts barking at Ruby which causes them to tell Dorothy that she’s not a witch but rather half wolf. Toto starts running away as a green tornado approaches them. Zelena appears to the girls and explains she was banished back to Oz and needs Dorothy’s silver slippers so she can get back to her daughter in Storybrooke. Dorothy refuses, so Zelena shows her leverage: she has trapped Toto. She gives them one day to give her the shoes or Toto is no more. She disappears and the girls are left trying to figure out their next move. Mulan stays put at their camping area while Ruby tags along with Dorothy. They chat about nicknames in the poppy field and their mutual upbringing with people who never understood them. Suddenly two flying monkeys are after them. Ruby transforms into her wolf form and has Dorothy hop on. They head back into the forest to Mulan, explaining the attack. Dorothy watches Ruby transform back to a human and walks to her room, leaving Ruby to believe she is scared or repulsed by her transformation. Mulan tells Ruby to talk to Dorothy about her feelings for her but when Ruby gets to Dorothy’s room, she’s not there.
Back in the Underworld, the heroes confront Zelena about what happened in Oz. She explains she caught Dorothy and put her under a sleeping spell and only true love’s kiss can awake her. The group panics, trying to think of someone who loves Dorothy. They figure out her Aunt Em is in the Underworld somewhere so they’re off to find her. After a visit to the witch and the men telling them the phone to the living is broken, they reach Aunt Em in her diner. They open a vile for Aunt Em to send Dorothy a kiss, but it’s a trick from Hades that melts Aunt Em instead. Hades explains that this will happen to anyone else who tries to help the heroes.
The group is distraught, but Snow thinks there may be another way. She has a heart to heart with Ruby about her feelings for Dorothy. She can tell there’s love there, so Ruby might be the one to break the spell. Ruby is nervous Dorothy won’t reciprocate but Snow tells her she needs to try.
Ruby takes the silver slippers, which Zelena gave to Regina after their sister talk, and is about to leave with David when David tells all the heroes that Hook was able to switch the names on the tombstones so Snow is now alive and can go with Ruby to save Dorothy and then go home to their son in Storybrooke. Ruby clicks her heels and they are in Oz where Mulan and the Munchkins are surrounding Dorothy. Ruby kisses Dorothy, who wakes up. She explains to Ruby she left because she cared too much about her to see her get hurt by Zelena. They kiss passionately and wind up in Henry’s book. Henry informs the heroes that Ruby saved Dorothy and Snow is back with baby Neal.
Meanwhile, Belle had met with Zelena convincing Zelena to help save her baby from Hades. Zelena gives Belle a sleeping spell which will pause the pregnancy but not hurt the baby. Belle tells Rumple she needs him to find her father to wake her once he destroys Hades and the deal. He doesn’t want her to do this but it’s too late and she pricks her finger.
Zelena goes to see Hades, searching for answers. He tells her everything he’s done is for her. They share a drink and it looks like the romance is back on.
It was so great to have Ruby back in action! I loved her and Dorothy swapping stories because Dorothy thinks she has it bad until Ruby tells her she ate her boyfriend and was chased out of town by pitchforks. I also loved the little throwback to the original film when Mulan asked Ruby what she knew about Oz and she said “I think they sing a lot…I saw the movie in Storybrooke”. Too good!
And of course we had to say goodbye for now to Belle and Snow, both actresses were pregnant in real life so I’m sure their maternity leave kicked in. Smart idea for Belle though to mess with Hades’ plans. I was thinking at first that the reason Zelena went to see Hades was to protect Belle so Hades wouldn’t try to stop her from doing the spell. Might still be the reason but if Zelena and Hades hook up, that’ll be a lot of trouble for our heroes.
