“Pretty Little Liars” Recap: Don’t Get Caught in Charlotte’s Web

Last time we caught up with the liar’s, they were reuniting after going their separate ways (and 5 ‘A free years’) to come back to Rosewood in order to attend the hearing of Charlotte DiLaurentis; debating whether or not she would be released to society. However, a dramatic turn of events kept the liar’s in Rosewood rather than returning to their newfound lives.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD…

(ABC Family/Eric McCandless)

Charlotte has died and it’s now being ruled a homicide, a violent struggle with a broken neck and blunt force trauma. This forces the girls to stay in town a little longer than expected, to be questioned as suspects in the sudden death of the girl whom tortured them for years on end.

During the hearing, Aria was the only one to say that she would not feel safe, while the other girls lied (…shocker) and said they would feel safe with Charlotte being out in society.

Tonight, we learned during the episode that Aria left Hanna’s hotel room the night Charlotte was released and had been caught doing so on security tapes attained by Hanna. Of course, this automatically raises suspicion because Aria was the only one that showed insecurities during the hearing about Charlotte walking free.

The police decide to start the rounds of questioning with the individuals Charlotte targeted while she was ‘A’. Which means, Hanna, Aria, Emily and Spencer are up first. However, Aria decides to go back to Boston anyhow, proclaiming she has to get back to work because she has missed too many days.

Hanna stops Aria before she leaves, telling her around 3 am when she woke up to get a drink, she saw that Aria left and she didn’t come back for quite some time. Aria tried to play it off by saying in a stern voice she just had to go to her car to get her charger for her phone because it died and she needed to check messages from work.

Aria stops at Ezra’s on the way to the airport to clear the air. She tells Ezra “We didn’t see each other the other night when Charlotte was killed. Got it?” Ezra tells her not to worry, and… as we learn later in the episode, that no one will know they saw one another or Charlotte as she went into the church around 4 am. Aria then proceeds to ask what Ezra did when she went back to the hotel — and all he said was that he went home with a stone cold look on his face and a drink in his hand. Do we believe him?

Later on, after the girls question Aria and her whereabouts, they then discuss with Aria the possibilities of Ezra being connected to the murder. She says she knew Ezra lied about going home that night because he didn’t look her in the eyes, and she knows when he is lying to her. The only problem is that they can’t see how Ezra Fitz could think of a way to even murder someone, even though Ezra was very mad that night after he put Aria in the cab to go back to the hotel.

All the sudden, Spencer chimes in about a paper she wrote on a deadly crime, and let Ezra read when she visited him on his book tour two years ago. The article was about a girl who was found dead after falling, with blunt force trauma to her neck. She with flowers in her hand, and her finger nails completely wiped clean. Just as Charlotte was found.

On another note, the girls are still questioning why Sara Harvey has been making random appearances in town. She has also been taken off the suspect list as to whom killed Charlotte because she has been diagnosed with Stockholm syndrome; “or capture-bonding, is a psychological phenomenon in which hostages express empathy and sympathy and have positive feelings toward their captors, sometimes to the point of defending and identifying with the captors.”
