“The Fosters” Recap: Under Water

Freeform’s “The Fosters” aired an amazing episode last night. I mean seriously Fosters fans… HOW GREAT WAS THIS EPISODE?! Like every episode, this week was filled with love, humor, and of course, drama! Season 3B has been such a joy to watch. As always I am here to give you the rundown on all that happened & offer some of my insight. Let’s dive right into “Under Water.”

Stef & Lena

Stef had a tough episode last night. She finally told the kids about what has been going on with her health. She confronted Lena about how scared she is that Lena will leave her after the surgery because she won’t be “beautiful,” but come on… Will Teri Polo ever not be beautiful?!

Stef started out the this episode at the doctor’s office with Lena discussing her surgery and how it will be orchestrated. In the middle of their talk, Stef starts to drift off into a daydream about swimming naked in a pool. Which, as someone who is obsessed with water and the feeling of freedom swimming give you… I got you mama Stef!

The next thing we see is Stef letting her mom, Sharon (guest star Annie Potts) know that she is signing over her “Power of Attorney” just incase something goes wrong with the operation. That conversation immediately makes grandma Sharon worried about why Stef is giving that authority to her and not Lena and wonders if they have been fighting.

Which leads us to what has been going on with both our mamas and that is trust issues and keeping things hidden. This week Lena rekindled her friendship with Monte (recurring guest star Anika Marks) after she requests time off to help Stef out after the surgery. (Which can i just say really quick that I support the friendship between these two, as long as Monte can lose her feelings or keep them locked down.)

Well Stef sees them talking and gets jealous. Instead of the two talking about it right away they let it rest & when the truth does come out it gets twisted. Stef doesn’t like Lena being friends with Monte because she is afraid that Lena will start to grow feelings when she loses her sex appeal after the surgery. Yet thankfully Lena reassures Stef that she loves her for way more than her body & asks her if there is anything she can do to which Stef replies, “Take me swimming?”

Later that night Stef tells the kids about the operation and we are treated to a lovely family scene that hit me in all the sweet spots. The kids are of course scared, yet they take the news as well as they can. After the family meeting Lena takes Stef on an adventure in which they sneak into a neighbor’s backyard where they fulfill Stef’s earlier request to go wash all her stress away with the power of water.

Callie & Jude

Callie had a much less dramatic week compared to the past few episodes. She has been trying to visit AJ in juvie and save what little friendship she left with him after doing the right thing and ratting his and Ty’s location out. When she can’t prevail with AJ, she chooses the next best option, Ty. (guest star Chris Warren) She visits Ty and asks him to try and convince AJ to not give up on Mike & the chance to truly be happy & with a family that loves him until he can reunited with Ty once he serves his hard time. Hopefully Ty can handle the job and we can have AJ back soon!

The other thing rattling Callie this week is her “catfish” aka Jude’s new buddy Jack Downey. (guest star Tanner Buchanan) Callie discovers that Jack is behind the username pretending to be AJ and confronts him. Yet right after her and Jude find out that Jack has been abused by some of the older boys inhis group home that Justina (guest star Kelli Williams) has lied about putting him in. Callie and Jude try to help him by getting him placed in a new home but Jack won’t have it. After his recent run in with the bullies he gets hurt so bad that he has to go to the hospital which results in the owners of his group home giving Jack power for the first time in his life which he takes.

Jesus & Mariana

Jesus has decided to try and work with his potential birth father Gabe (guest star Brandon Quinn) at the construction site. Yet Jesus hasn’t been entirely honest with him because Gabe thinks that his name is Nick and he is a high school senior. Once Jesus finally gets the courage to finally reveal who he is, Gabe freaks out and tell him that he can’t legally see him. Which is what makes Jesus clue Mariana into what has been going on. Mariana is confused as to why Gabe can’t have contact with them so she does some digging and finds out that Gabe is a registered sex offender because in 1997 he was involved with a minor. Hmmm 1997? That sounds like the year the twins were conceived/born. Did Ana’s family report him for getting there at time underaged daughter pregnant?

Elsewhere we also see Mariana in her rehearsals for Brandon’s R&J show with Mat (recurring guest star Jordan Rodrigues) and new character Zoey (guest star Anna Grace Barlow). Mari gets jealous of Zoey because it looks like she might have a little crush on Mat. Hopefully Zoey doesn’t stand in the way of Matiana because I really want to like her!

We also see the spark between Mari and Jesus’s new buddy Nick (guest star Louis Hunter) heat up, sizzle out, and then heat up again. Nick asks Mari out the day before his honor council meeting (which Mariana is now on!) and she takes that as the reason why he asked her out. He tells her that it’s not and that he actually does like her. I can’t condone this relationship because Nick is such a troublemaker and bad influence.

Brandon

Brandon and co-worker Courtney (guest star Denyse Tontz) are connecting fast. They flirt while at work about Shirley Temple while Brandon is sipping from the drink of the same name that his lovely friend just made. He enjoys her much so that he volunteers his Saturday to help her do inventory at the bar (Which I’m pretty sure it’s illegal to let him do that seeing has how he isn’t 21 but I will condone it because it isn’t doing any harm.) During their little break they stop and clunk around on the piano singing and playing alittle number by Shirley Temple that Court introduced him to. Just when the song is ending Brandon leans in for a kiss and Courtney shuts him down. She tells him things are complicated because they are both on the rebound and she is older.

After a few days Brandon decides that he doesn’t care that things are “complicated” and he confronts her outside her car before his next shift but while he is talking to her he catches a glimpse of a surprise he (and I) didn’t see coming. Looks like our friend Courtney has a two year old son. Does Brandon still want something between them after learning this news?
