Clary and the gang were able to retrieve the Book of the White and wake up Jocelyn. Now they have a chance of defeating Valentine. Episode 1, “The Guilty Blood”, of season 2 explains more of Jace and Valentine’s relationship, their past and the history of Clary and her family. Spoilers ahead!

“The Guilty Blood”

The episode opens with a fight scene between Jace and Valentine aboard a ship defending Clary. Jace lands an attack on Valentine and thinks he has finally killed his own father. Clary and Jace run to escape the ship but Valentine has managed to trick Jace by using a rune to make his newly raised shadowhunters to look like him and fight against Jace. Valentine was tricking Jace the entire time and pretending to be Clary to test his loyalty. When Valentine realizes Jace’s loyalty lies with his friends, he continues to put him through rigorous tests.

We cut to a scene of the institute control room. Lydia is telling Alec, Izzy and Magnus that she is unable to contact the Clave. Foreshadowing at it’s finest. The institute is attempting to use rune tracking technology to find Jace. Unfortunately Valentine has found a way to keep anyone from tracking either of them.

Clary and her mother talked in the green house and promised not to have anymore secrets between them. She gave Jocelyn the box that her mother kept all of Johnathon’s things in. She tells her mother that he is alive and her mother denies that there is any possibility he could be alive.

Alec and Magnus get into a disagreement on the roof of the institute. He becomes upset that Magnus will not help him track Jace using his parabatia bond because the last time Alec used his rune to track Jace he almost died. If your significant other wanted to risk their life and you were the one inflicting the pain, would you be able to do it?

Clary receives a text from Izzy and they all rush to the control room where Maryse is announcing that the Clave has announced a state of emergency and that Valentine now has the cup with plans to raise an army. She also announces the New York institute will now be run by a Clave representative by the name Victor Aldertree.

Victor places the institute on lock down and demands a conference with each person that was on the mission with Jace when he disappeared. After questioning Clary he comes to the conclusion  that Jace knew what was going to happen all along.

Victor tells the group that Jace is a traitor. When Clary and the gang disagree, he prohibits the group from being involved in helping find Jace. He lifts the lock down on the institute except for Clary and Jocelyn because of their relationship to Valentine and Jace.

Now that Clary and the gang are not able to be involved in the investigation. Izzy takes it upon herself to help Clary with her training. I must say, Izzy has some really great battle style. I don’t just mean her technique. Izzy tells Clary, “To know your enemy, you must become your enemy”. This struck some unspoken plan between her and Clary. #GirlPower

Clary uses a rune to make herself look like Victor so she can leave the institute. Jocelyn follows her after a call from Luke and locks her in the garage that Simon is staying in. Jocelyn takes Clary phone and decides to find Jace and Valentine on her own.

Simon and Clary can’t find any way to get out of the garage. Simon’s phone has no cell service so they have no way to call for help. Clary and Simon start to reminisce on the way things used to be and then a secret door way falls open to let them out of the garage.

Magnus decides to help Alec track Jace with his rune. Once they start tracking Alec gets a sense of Jace being on land. Jocelyn has now picked up a path to Jace and the institute has found a location for Jace on land. Valentine and Jace walked onto land through a portal. Valentine sends Jace into a vampire infesed pizza parlor.  He takes out all the vampires and rescues any mundanes.

Jace asks for a vampire named Maria. She comes forward and eventually he is outnumbered. He runs into the front of the pizza parlor and takes out the vampires. When maria is the only vampire left, she throws up her hands and says “I surrender the the Clave”. All of this was obviously a test for Jace. When a down worlder surrenders, shadowhunter must not cause them harm. Even though maria surrendered Jace was still able to kill her. Passing Valentine’s test.

Jocelyn, Clary and Simon showed up as Jace killed Maria. She shot an arrow that was going to hit Jace and Valentine jumped in front of him. As Clary ran towards her, Jocelyn shot one more arrow as Jace and Valentine jumped into the portal. Clary runs to her mother and says “What have you done?”
