English actress, Daisy Head, is definitely making her mark in her first TV show for American audiences, “Guilt.” At age 25 she landed the lead role of Grace in Freeform’s mystery, drama! Read what she had to say about landing the role, working with her dad and being in England as all the craziness goes down! I also must mention, she could not have been any more of a pleasure to speak to!
First of all, you are absolutely amazing on the show, I’m obsessed with it!
Aw bless you, thank you so much!
Can you first tell me a little about the casting process and how you landed this role?
Sure, so it started off with my agent sent me the material to self tape and I think it was an untitled project at the very beginning. And it came through the english casting directors who I know and they know me and so I think that’s why for the first round they just had me put myself on tape, she doesn’t have to come out to london to do it. So then I got notes back… I tend to go to town on my self tapes. I love to interpret them in my own way and taking the opportunity to do with them what I please.
One of the scenes I decided she was going to be on a bed, so I was lying down on my table with pillows and stuff and I remember getting notes back from the creators saying “why is she lying down and why is she wearing a hoodie? can we get her to retape without the hood and not lying down.” (laughs) So I went up to London and I met with VHJ and they put me on tape and I was just sitting in the chair and wasn’t wearing a hoodie and I was like “so lets do it again.”
They had great feedback and then I met with Nicole and Katherine and Gary who were directing the pilot and we just had a wonderful meeting and it was great to hear their concept of the show and their ideas for the character of Grace and I was hooked. We all agreed on so many aspects and it was just a really lovely, creative and inspiring chat and everything fell into place and we never looked back.
This is your first big American TV role, what has this experience been like being introduced over here and on such a big network like freeform?
It’s been remarkable, amazing and challenging but I’ve enjoyed every second. In some respects it’s kind of weird being in England and having shot in england but having it airing in the states.
I’ve seen all the episodes up to date but it’s weird having been such a part of it and now sitting in my house in the country in England and being completely unaware of the storm the show has created. It’s fascinating in that respect. I don’t really know how it’s going down with fans over there. I have friends in the states sending me pictures of the posters and the billboards and stuff. It’s crazy.
Yeah, everytime I’m out driving a see a poster or billboard!
It’s mad not being able to see it or be a part of that
There is a lot of buzz that this is based off the Amanda Knox case. Did you look into that case at all to help you with this role?
Yes, so I knew and was fascinated by that case while it was happening. I already read her (Amanda Knox) autobiography. But this show…people have drawn similarities. But it is completely different. There are many more suspects than just the leads and her boyfriend. And the great thing is at the end of the season, you find out who’s done it and like, definitely, there is hard core evidence to prove that. The concept of a murder has always fascinated me and to be able to play someone who is at the center of a murder trial has been the most incredible opportunity to me. Because I can’t even fathom what it would be like to be on either end. To be the family of the dead or family and friends of the girl who’s the prime suspect. Obviously, I’ve tried to give a representation of it. It’s been amazing and incredible.
Speaking of family. Your real life dad plays your step dad on the show. What has that been like working together?
It’s been the most amazing thing ever. And it’s been one of my life-time goals and to achieve it at 25 is amazing. In regards to on screen chemistry there’s something there that is so natural.
He inspires me so much as a father and a actor and it has been so humbling to work with him.
Do you have a favorite memory of filming?
Not one specific. There have been countless moments and it has been such an incredible experience. The cast and crew and everyone was just a dream to work with. I’m so thankful for it all and the amazing lifetime friendships. I count my lucky stars I’ve been such a big part of this show.
